STD Testing Q&A

What are STDs?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections passed from person to person through sexual contact. This includes vaginal, anal, or oral sex. However, you can get some STDs, such as herpes, through intimate contact like kissing.

Millions of people contract an STD every year in the United States. Some of the more common STDs include:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Herpes
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis

When left untreated, STDs may cause other health complications like infertility or certain types of cancer.

What is STD testing?

STD testing determines if you have an infection. You can have an STD without having any obvious symptoms. Getting tested can help you get the treatment you need and prevent further health problems.

Dynamic Health & Wellness Center is a one-stop shop as a primary care practice. Mrs. Christensen takes a holistic and integrative approach to care and provides STD testing to protect your sexual, physical, and mental health.

When do I need STD testing?

STD testing is an important preventive care service. If you’re sexually active, you should think about getting tested.

Mrs. Christensen recommends STD testing for:

  • All sexually active women 25 and younger
  • Pregnant women
  • Sexually active individuals who don’t consistently use protection
  • Individuals with multiple sexual partners
  • Individuals with a sexual partner who has multiple partners
  • People with HIV
  • Men who have sex with men

You also need testing if you have any signs or symptoms of an STD, such as any abnormal genital discharge, genital sores, or pain during intercourse.

What happens during STD testing?

Mrs. Christensen first reviews your sexual and medical history before recommending any specific type of STD test. This helps her determine what to test for. STD testing may require a sample of blood or urine or a swab test of your sores or secretions.

When can I expect results from STD testing?

Mrs. Christensen explains when you can expect results from your STD testing. Some tests give results right away, while others may take several days.

She discusses the results of your test when available. If you test positive, Mrs. Christensen provides the appropriate treatment to clear up or manage your infection. She also talks to you about sexual health and how to protect yourself and your sexual partner from getting sick.

To schedule your STD testing, call Dynamic Health & Wellness Center or book online today.
